Description

1866-S Liberty Double Eagle, AU58
First Type Two Issue

1866-S $20 Motto AU58 NGC. CAC. Ex: Duquesne. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the double eagle design part-way through the year in 1866, creating the popular Type Two motif. The 1866-S Type Two double eagle enjoyed a substantial mintage of 842,250 pieces, but the issue circulated widely and few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary numismatists, despite the novelty of the new design. The 1866-S Type Two is very scarce in AU58, and finer examples are rare.

This impressive near-Mint specimen exhibits well-detailed design elements with a trace of friction on Liberty's hair. The colorful orange-gold surfaces display a few minor roller marks and other scattered abrasions, with ample mint luster and strong visual appeal. NGC has graded 23 numerically finer examples (5/15).
