Description

1866-S Liberty Twenty, AU58
First Year of the Type Two Design

1866-S $20 Motto AU58 PCGS. The year 1866 saw the introduction of the Type Two design on double eagles, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse. The San Francisco Mint achieved a substantial mintage of 842,250 pieces that year, and most of the coins were released into circulation in the regional economy. Few examples were saved by numismatists, and the issue is most often seen in VF and XF grades today. The 1866-S is quite scarce in AU58 condition, and Mint State examples are rare.
This attractive near-Mint specimen shows just a trace of actual wear on the well-detailed design elements. The light yellow and orange-gold surfaces retain much original mint luster, with the expected number of minor abrasions for the grade. Population: 22 in 58, 18 finer (5/12).(Registry values: N1793)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269Y, PCGS# 8950, Greysheet# 9907)
