Description
1866-S Double Eagle, MS60
First-Year Type Two Twenty
1866-S $20 Motto MS60 NGC. The addition of the IN GOD WE
TRUST motto inspired a rather large 842,250-piece double eagle
mintage. These coins circulated widely on the West Coast among a
public that was essentially unaware of the design change, or simply
did not care about it. Most of the coins circulated heavily,
surviving in VF to XF condition but seldom significantly finer.
This MS60 example has a few light bagmarks and some coin-to-coin
chatter. Straw-gold surfaces deepen near the well-struck, raised
devices. The 1866-S Motto twenty is scarce in any Mint State and
highly collectible as such. Census: 5 in 60, 28 finer
(5/25).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269Y, PCGS# 8950, Greysheet# 9907)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
