Description

Pleasing 1866-S Liberty Double Eagle, MS60
Condition Rarity, With Motto

1866-S $20 Motto MS60 PCGS. The first year of the Type Two double eagle design, and a popular issue with type collectors. The 1866-S Liberty Head, With Motto double eagle boasts a substantial mintage of 842,250 pieces. The coins circulated heavily in the regional economy at the time of issue. While the issue is not difficult to locate in circulated grades today, it is a rarity in Mint State. David Akers reports, "With respect to condition rarity, the 1866-S Motto is in the top 10% of the entire Double Eagle series." Q. David Bowers estimates perhaps 40 to 70 examples survive today in Mint State grades.
The present coin features a better than average strike, with only slight weakness on the central obverse, as usually seen. The surfaces are bright orange-gold, with unusually attractive frosty luster. Handling marks are consistent with the grade. Population: 4 in 60, 18 finer (10/09).(Registry values: N4719)
