Description

1866-S Liberty Twenty, MS61
First S-Mint Type Two Issue

1866-S $20 Motto MS61 PCGS Gold Shield. The San Francisco Mint struck a small mintage of the older Type One double eagles early in 1866, before the new dies with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST arrived from Philadelphia. Once the dies were on hand, a more substantial production of 842,250 double eagles of the new design was accomplished. Most of the coins circulated heavily in the hard money economy of the Western United States, or were used to settle accounts in foreign trade. Few were saved for numismatic purposes. As a result, the Type Two 1866-S Liberty twenty is an elusive issue in Mint State grades today.

The present coin is an attractive MS61 specimen, with well-detailed design elements and pleasing orange-gold surfaces that show the appropriate number of minor contact marks for the grade. Both sides retain much of their original mint luster intact. Population: 16 in 61, 8 finer (12/18).(Registry values: N7079)
