1866-S No Motto Double Eagle, AU55
Transitional San Francisco Issue

1866-S $20 No Motto AU55 NGC. CAC. The famous 1866-S No Motto double eagle had a recorded mintage of 120,000 coins, although many specialists believe that a substantial number of those coins were melted, with a net production of far less than 100,000 pieces. Consider that NGC and PCGS have certified 67,352 Type Two double eagles dated from 1866 to 1876, representing one certification event for 240 examples minted during that span. With 282 examples of the 1866-S No Motto certified, the constant implies a net mintage of 67,664 coins. We chose Type Two double eagles as our sample since that type is unaffected by unusual hoards or treasures that alter the Type One data.

The 1866-S No Motto was coined from left over reverse dies of the previous year. Once the new With Motto dies arrived in San Francisco, the old dies were retired. This AU55 NGC-certified coin shows good eye appeal on medium yellow-orange surfaces. The strike is a bit soft on a few of the stars ringing the obverse periphery. A scattering of mostly light marks from circulation is fairly extensive throughout both sides but more pronounced on the obverse, where it thins the luster. Such an effect is almost a given on these coins that appear to have quietly slipped into circulation, for the most part. Considerable semiprooflike reflectivity remains on the reverse, most visible in the protected areas around the shield ornaments and the peripheral lettering. Among the few larger-sized marks is a moderate dig in the field between D and S in UNITED STATES. Census: 20 in 55, 12 finer (3/14).
