1866-S Twenty Dollar Liberty, AU58
Rare Branch Mint No Motto Issue
Final Use of the Type One Reverse

1866-S $20 No Motto AU58 PCGS. The 1866-S No Motto double eagle represents a defining moment in the Liberty Head series as the final No Motto twenty from any mint. The Type One double eagle subset is one of the most challenging objectives for any collector, highlighted by a run of rare to ultra-rare New Orleans issues, several low-population Philadelphia twenties from the Civil War years and beyond, plus two standout rarities from the San Francisco Mint -- the 1861-S Paquet Reverse double eagle and the 1866-S No Motto twenty. Of course, the rarest Type One is the Philadelphia 1861 Paquet Reverse double eagle, with only two examples that exist, although that monumental rarity is off the radar for nearly all collectors. This 1866-S No Motto example in near-Mint condition goes a long way to satisfying the S-mint contingent in a Type One set. The 1866-S No Motto becomes at the AU55 grade and decisively rare any finer. Fewer than two dozen pieces are known in Mint State and most of those are at the MS60 or MS61 level. The finest examples at PCGS are two MS62 coins. While tiny marks dot the surfaces of this AU58 example, actual circulation wear is barely discernible and essentially full mint luster radiates from both the obverse and the reverse. As expected, there is some lightness of strike on a few stars, yet this coin is sharp for the issue. Attractive honey-gold color provides exceptional eye appeal for an 1866-S No Motto double eagle, considering "nearly all of the coins seen of the date are very well worn or heavily marked. Extremely Fine pieces are rare, and in About Uncirculated condition the issue is considered a major rarity," as reported by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins. PCGS Population: 12 in 58, 7 finer (7/25).(Registry values: N4719)
