1866-S No Motto Double Eagle, XF45
Prized Final Type One S-Mint Issue

1866-S $20 No Motto XF45 NGC. In Philadelphia, Mint officials intended that no Without Motto double eagles be released to the public, but due to late arrival of the new With Motto dies the San Francisco Mint struck an estimated 120,000 twenties using the old No Motto dies. While not all of those coins saw commercial use, enough pieces entered circulation to create one of the rarest S-mint issues in the Type One double eagle subset. The 1866-S is also the last of the No Motto twenties regardless of mint. This olive-gold example displays orange accents throughout minimally abraded surfaces that offer Choice XF definition. Unlike most of the No Motto examples, there are no heavy marks and smooth, problem-free wear allows substantial eye appeal to survive.(Registry values: N2998)
