Description

Low-Mintage 1866-S No Motto Twenty Dollar, XF45

1866-S $20 No Motto XF45 NGC. Douglas Winter and Adam Crum, in their 2002 An Insider's Guide to Collecting Type I Double Eagles, write that:

"Approximately 12,000 1866-S double eagles were struck with the Type I reverse in February, prior to instructions from Philadelphia were received to change over to the new Type II reverse. This is an unheralded but very scarce issue that is actually among the rarest Liberty Head double eagles of any type in higher grades. It is also an interesting transitional coin that represents the only dual issue Liberty Head double eagle."

The peach-gold surfaces of this Choice XF example are imbued with hints of light tan, and display traces of luster in some of the recesses. The strike is comparatively strong for the issue, and the few minute marks scattered about are not out of line with the grade designation. Census: 47 in 45, 59 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N2998)
