Description

1867 Double Eagle, MS63
Condition Census Candidate

1867 $20 MS63 NGC. Intense mint luster is the rule for this Type Two twenty, which features sunglow-gold toning and peach-gold highlights. The 251,065-piece mintage was heavily exported and many European repatriates occupy the lower Mint State grades, but this Select Uncirculated coin is finer than that. Only a dozen or so 1867 double eagles qualify for the MS63 grade or finer. The strike is pinpoint sharp on the current coin, especially on the reverse. Liberty's upper hair strands are only a smidgen soft. A cluster of light marks and abrasions in the lower-left field near the neck are a grade-determining factor, although the eye appeal alone makes this coin an excellent addition to any collection. Census: 3 in 63, 1 finer (11/24).(Registry values: N7079)
