Description

1867-S Double Eagle, MS60
Rarely Encountered in Mint State

1867-S $20 MS60 PCGS. Most double eagle issues of the 1860s are scarce or rare in Mint State, regardless of mintage. In the case of the 1867-S, more than 920,000 pieces were struck, but the number of Uncirculated examples remaining today number only a few dozen. In their gold Encyclopedia (2008), Garrett and Guth write: "Nearly all of the coins offered at auction over the last 15 years have been in About Uncirculated condition, mostly on the low end of that scale. Mint State pieces are very rare."

This Uncirculated coin is heavily abraded, as the grade suggests, but there are no individually bothersome marks. The strike is bold, and the green-gold surfaces feature original mint luster. Population: 14 in 60, 12 finer (2/17).(Registry values: P6)
