Description

1867-S Liberty Double Eagle, MS61
Rarely Seen Any Finer

1867-S $20 MS61 NGC. The 1867-S Liberty double eagle was produced in large numbers, with a reported mintage of 920,750 pieces. Most of the coins circulated widely at the time of issue and examples in average circulated condition are readily available today. Few high-grade specimens were saved for numismatic purposes, however, and the 1867-S is a challenging issue in all Mint State grades. The 1867-S is rare at the MS61 grade level, and finer coins are prime condition rarities. This impressive MS61 example displays well-detailed design elements, with just a touch of softness on Liberty's hair and some star centers. The pleasing peach-gold surfaces show the minimum number of minor contact marks for the grade. Vibrant mint luster enhances the outstanding eye appeal. Census: 18 in 61, 6 finer (2/20).
