Description

1867-S Double Eagle, MS61
Formidable Challenge Any Finer

1867-S $20 MS61 NGC. Despite its nearly million-piece mintage, the 1867-S exists almost exclusively in circulated condition. Uncirculated examples congregate at the lowest levels (MS60 to MS61), with a solitary MS63 coin at the top of the Condition Census. Overall, the 1867-S is considered the second-rarest Type Two twenty from the San Francisco Mint. Many pieces were melted, while others simply disappeared by attrition.

This example embodies originality. Dusky orange-gold surfaces display deep-gray bag grime on the high points, the "dirty gold" look preferred by purists who demand unsullied surfaces. Mint luster glows beneath the rich patina throughout both sides. Numerous tiny marks and abrasions dot the well-struck surfaces, yet few pieces can be considered any finer. Census: 18 in 61, 6 finer (10/19).(Registry values: P6)
