Description

1867-S Double Eagle, MS61
Appealing for the Grade
Rare Any Finer

1867-S $20 MS61 PCGS. Large S. There can be no denying that, at first glance, this 1867-S Liberty Head double eagle appears decidedly better than the MS61 grade suggests. The surfaces are smooth and partly frosted without any abrasions that stand out individually. Most stars are fully formed (save the first three), and definition on the eagle's neck, wings, talons, and tailfeathers is bold. Faint rose and green accents accompany each side.

The 1867-S represents the second year of issue for the Type Two design at the San Francisco Mint, with output totaling 920,750 coins. The date claims an average certified assessment of AU50, and it is likely that fewer than a dozen examples have a claim to a higher grade than the coin offered here. Population: 15 in 61, 7 finer (11/21).
