Description

Elusive, Appealing Near-Mint 1868-S Double Eagle

1868-S $20 AU58 NGC. The generous mintage exceeding three-quarters of a million coins belies the rarity of this issue in high grade. The average certified survivor grades only Choice XF or a bit better, and Mint State coins are "exceedingly rare," according to Bowers' reference on the denomination. It appears as though most examples circulated in the hardscrabble West of the era, while those that remained Uncirculated must have been melted at a later date. The present coin, unlike most circulated and Mint State pieces seen, is relatively free of bagmarks, and has wonderful eye appeal emanating from the orange-gold surfaces. The strike is somewhat weak on some of the peripheral stars on the obverse, but the abundant luster and premium appeal more than compensate. (Registry values: N1793)
