Description

Lovely 1868-S Double Eagle, AU58

1868-S $20 AU58 NGC. Like most early S-mint double eagles, the 1868-S is easily located in low grades but becomes challenging in Mint State. NGC and PCGS combined have certified just 46 examples finer than the present coin (8/09). A number of light grazes define the grade, but there are no marks worthy of specific mention. Stars 1 through 3 lack definition in the centrils, but the rest of the details are bold. The reverse is particularly lustrous.(Registry values: N1793)
