Description

1868-S Double Eagle, MS61
Seldom Seen in Mint State

1868-S $20 MS61 NGC. Although more than 800,000 double eagles were struck at San Francisco in 1868, few pieces survive in Mint State. In fact, examples are scarce in MS60 and MS61, and anything finer is a major rarity. This piece is well-struck and lustrous with rich orange-gold patina. Grade-limiting abrasions are minor, and eye appeal is outstanding for the grade. Census: 19 in 61, 7 finer (8/20).
