Description

1869 Liberty Twenty, MS60
Mint State Rarity

1869 $20 MS60 PCGS. The 1869 Philadelphia double eagle is the definition of a sleeper date, with a fairly large mintage of 175,130 pieces, yet few Uncirculated examples known. Even at the lowest Mint State level such as this coin, less than three dozen pieces are certified numerically finer by PCGS and NGC combined, among just 41 grading events for Mint State coins in total (5/14). We seldom have more than one or two pieces of the date per auction in any condition.

The present coin is extremely lustrous and obviously Uncirculated, although heavily abraded on the obverse. The color is just how most gold enthusiasts like it: gleaming orange with some deeper, orange-gold accents. A bold strike confirms the MS60 grade.(Registry values: N2998)
