Description

1869 Double Eagle, MS61
Remarkable Mint State Survivor

1869 $20 MS61 PCGS Gold Shield. As of (12/18), PCGS and NGC have certified 51 Mint State submissions for the 1869 double eagle. With 175,155 pieces struck, that total represents an Uncirculated survival rate of merely 0.03%. The fact is none of these coins were ever intended to survive. They were manufactured exclusively for export, as gold and silver remained unseen in domestic circulation after the Civil War. Once the coins were received abroad, they were usually melted and recoined. It is purely by chance that a few dozen Mint State pieces are extant, including this MS61 representative. Khaki accents complement frosty orange-gold surfaces. The stars show full radials, and partial detail appears on the eagle's neck feathers. Heavily abraded, as expected, with a scrape between OF AM. Population: 13 in 61, 17 finer (12/18).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26A5, PCGS# 8955, Greysheet# 9806)
