Description
1869 Double Eagle, MS61
Seldom Seen in Mint State
1869 $20 MS61 PCGS. This coin offers far more eye appeal
than the grade might imply, showing a few relatively minor luster
grazes in the obverse fields. The surfaces are not unabraded, but
those abrasions are less in both number and severity than one would
expect, putting this piece in a minority for the issue. Generous
mint luster emanates from each side, and the reddish-orange
coloration visible throughout adds to the allure. The strike is
boldly detailed throughout. PCGS has seen nine submissions in this
grade with 15 finer (4/13). A great example of this Type Two double
eagle, struck to the extent of 175,000 pieces -- about one-fourth
that of the 1869-S.(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26A5, PCGS# 8955, Greysheet# 9806)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
