Description

1869 Liberty Twenty, MS61
Exceptional Mint State Survivor

1869 $20 MS61 PCGS. Many double eagle issues from the period following the Civil War, including the 1869, are conditionally scarce in Mint State. The San Francisco Mint handled the bulk of double eagle production for circulation purposes, as they were closer to gold reserves and there was an obvious preference for hard money transactions throughout the West. Philadelphia mintages tended to be smaller and were primarily used as reserves or within overseas transactions. Although Philadelphia struck 175,130 double eagles in 1869, a low survival rate combined with extensive bag marks leaves the issue conditionally scarce in attractive Mint State.

This is an attractive coin, exhibiting deep green-gold surfaces covered in vibrant orange overtones. Subtle splashes of lavender visit the edges, showing slightly deeper on the reverse. Luster is plentiful and shows frosty shades of lilac in the recesses and device borders. The strike is sharp save for slight softness on the eagle's head and talons. A loupe reveals small marks on Liberty's face that account for the grade, otherwise marks are light with none showing individually significant. With PCGS reporting only 20 numerically finer examples, this double eagle will undoubtedly catch the eye of series specialists. (12/25)(Registry values: N4719)
