    1869-S Double Eagle, MS62
High-End for the Issue, Conditionally Rare

1869-S $20 MS62 NGC. PCGS lists four 1869-S double eagles pedigreed to the Saddle Ridge Hoard, although none are in Mint State. Many lower-end Uncirculated examples of this date come from old-time sources, as David Akers reported numerous auction appearances of such coins in his Analysis of Auction Records (1982). Today, examples are usually available for a price in MS60 or MS61, but in MS62 the date becomes rare, and only a few finer pieces are known. This example displays sharp design elements and frosty peach-gold mint luster. Scattered abrasions define the grade, including a couple of linear scrapes below and to the right of the date. Census: 18 in 62 (3 in 62+), 5 finer (1/18).(Registry values: N4719)
