Description

1870 Liberty Twenty, MS60
Elusive Philadelphia Issue

1870 $20 MS60 PCGS. A nominal mintage of 155,150 Liberty double eagles was achieved at the Philadelphia Mint in 1870, as the San Francisco facility handled the majority of double eagle production in that era. The Philadelphia issue is actually even more difficult to locate in all grades than its modest production total suggests. Mint State specimens are particularly elusive and most auction offerings grade no better than AU53.

The present coin is an attractive MS60 example with well-detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster on both sides. The vivid orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded for the grade and eye appeal is especially strong. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 5 in 60, 36 finer (8/13).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26A7, PCGS# 8957, Greysheet# 9807)

Weight: 33.44 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
