Description
Uncommon MS61 1870 Double Eagle
1870 $20 MS61 NGC. The 1870 double eagle is one of several Type Two twenties not represented in the National Numismatic Collection holdings as a business strike, and Garrett and Guth note that "the average grade seen at auction is About Uncirculated, with many famous collections having the date in that state of preservation." The next owner of this MS61 example will be able to do them all one better. Though long abrasions are noted on the cheek and in the field to the left of the portrait, flashy honey-gold luster dominates the eye appeal, especially on the better-preserved reverse. Census: 15 in 61, 18 finer (2/11).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26A7, PCGS# 8957, Greysheet# 9807)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
