Description

1870 Double Eagle, MS61
Scarce Philadelphia Twenty

1870 $20 MS61 PCGS. CAC. The 1870 double eagle is significantly scarcer than is often realized by nonspecialists. About Uncirculated is the typical grade encountered, and Garrett and Guth note that the issue is "very rare in full Mint State." Moreover, most such pieces are heavily abraded. The Smithsonian Institution lacks a circulation strike example of this date, pointing to the preference of early collectors to acquire proofs, leaving the circulation-issue pieces to slowly fade away in commerce. This Uncirculated representative exhibits radiant, frosty luster with only light chatter limiting the grade. The devices are well-struck and the surfaces yield pleasing yellow-gold color. Population: 18 in 61, 22 finer (4/15).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26A7, PCGS# 8957, Greysheet# 9807)
