Description

1870 Type Two Twenty, MS61
Challenging Philadelphia Issue

1870 $20 MS61 PCGS. The 1870 Liberty double eagle claims a fairly low mintage of 155,150 pieces, and the issue is definitely ranks among the better Philadelphia dates. Like most Type Two twenties, the 1870 circulated widely and few examples were saved for numismatic purposes. The 1870 is particularly elusive in Mint State condition. The lustrous, medium yellow-gold surfaces of this attractive MS61 double eagle show a minimum number of minor contact marks for the grade. Well-defined design elements exhibit just a touch of softness over Liberty's hair. PCGS Population: 40 in 61, 28 finer (1/25).
Ex: New York Signature (Heritage, 10-11/2015), lot 3625; ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2016), lot 4356, which brought $19,975.(Registry values: N4719)
