Description

1870 Liberty Head Double Eagle, MS61
Elusive Date in Mint State

1870 $20 MS61 PCGS. The 1870 Liberty Head double eagle was produced in adequate quantities, but the issue is seldom encountered today, especially in Mint State grades. Collecting large denomination gold coins did not become popular until the 1930s, and the few collectors who did pursue double eagle collections usually opted for proof specimens to represent the date. Current population data reveals PCGS has certified only 12 coins in MS61, with 22 finer, while NGC has graded 14 MS61 specimens, with 17 finer (8/10). The data may be inflated by resubmissions.
The present coin is a pleasing Mint State specimen, with rich, greenish-gold surfaces, accented by shades of orange and red. The design elements are sharply impressed, with just the slightest softness evident on the lower curls. Subtle, original mint luster complements the pleasing color. A scattering of minor abrasions on both sides is consistent with the grade.(Registry values: N4719)
