Bold MS62 1870 Double Eagle
A Rarity in Mint State
1870 $20 MS62 ANACS. Lush orange-gold coloration,
semiprooflike fields, and an impressively bold strike are the prime
motivators for bidders on this delightful double eagle. The star
centrils around the periphery are all well-detailed, and even
Liberty's hair is better brought up than usual. Mint State examples
of this issue are quite rare, despite an original mintage exceeding
155,000 pieces. Even the presence of a nick at the corner of
Liberty's mouth and a small copper alloy spot in the hair above the
bun do little to diminish the appeal. A few scattered ticks are in
keeping with the grade. Breen notes that the middle arrowhead on
the reverse is "shaftless," and so it is.(Registry values: N7079)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26A7, PCGS# 8957, GSID# 9807)
