Description
Near-Mint State 1870-S Double Eagle
1870-S $20 AU58 NGC. While the mintage of the 1870-S twenty dollar approaches 1 million pieces, most were apparently destroyed or exported, never to return to the States. NGC/PCGS population reports indicate that surviving coins are in XF to low AU levels of preservation. Mint State examples are very rare, and most known specimens grade MS60 or MS61. Near-Mint State pieces such as the present offering are thus the finest most collectors will be able to locate. Peach-gold surfaces imbued with traces of reddish-tan possess ample luster and are well struck. Scattered small marks are consistent with a large, heavy gold coin that saw brief circulation.(Registry values: N991)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26A9, PCGS# 8959, GSID# 9912)
