Description

1871 Twenty Dollar, MS62
Eye-Appealing for the Grade
A Major Rarity This Fine

1871 $20 MS62 NGC. Any Mint State 1871 double eagle is a rarity, as might be expected considering this issue comes from a limited mintage of only 80,120 pieces and preceded the large-scale overseas export of gold coins. Examples in MS61 are occasionally seen, but at the MS62 level, this date becomes a notable rarity. In practice, very few coins in MS62 or better have appeared at auction in the last 20 years. The number of individual coins seen in these grades is staggeringly small. The present lot is a desirable satiny caramel-gold representative. It is distinctive for having a remarkably clean, luminous appearance devoid of bothersome abrasions. Instead, some light hairlines on the obverse limit the numeric grade. Overall, the eye appeal is excellent. Census: 1 in 62, 3 finer (10/25).(Registry values: P6)
