Rare 1871-CC Double Eagle, AU58

1871-CC $20 AU58 NGC. The low-mintage 1871-CC is the second-rarest Carson City double eagle, both in overall rarity and high grade rarity, trailing only the 1870-CC (Douglas Winter, 2001, p. 150). The 2009 Guide Book reports that 17,387 pieces were struck, although Rusty Goe in The Mint on Carson Street says mint records report 14,687 coins. When available, the 1871-CC usually grades Very Fine to Extremely Fine. It is scarce in the low and mid levels of About Uncirculated and rare in AU58. The certified Mint State population currently numbers a mere six specimens (4/09).
A primary factor underlying the 1871-CC's rarity is the nature of double eagle circulation at the time. While other, later Carson City double eagle issues were used in international trade and stored in vaults for years or even decades at a time, the earliest CC-mint twenties, including the 1870 and 1871 issues, circulated extensively in the channels of commerce in and around Nevada. This makes substantially worn and heavily abraded coins the rule rather than the exception, and the collector who expects to find an attractive 1871-CC double eagle quickly and easily will be disappointed.
This near-Mint State representative offers excellent eye appeal for the issue, with lemon-gold surfaces that show considerable luster and only a trace of friction. The design features exhibit relatively strong definition, except that a couple of star centers and portions of Liberty's hair are soft. Some reverse die breaks are visible on the scroll, one of which obliterates the E preceding PLURIBUS. Although a number of light to moderate surface and rim marks occur on each side, the overall eye appeal remains impressive. A coin worthy of consideration for the finest Carson City cabinet.(Registry values: N1793)
