    1871-CC Double Eagle, Unc. Details
    Rare Early Carson City Issue

1871-CC $20 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. Variety 2-A. The 1871-CC is one of the rarest Carson City double eagles in high grades, second only to the nearly unobtainable 1870-CC. The actual mintage figure of this issue is sometimes debated, though most published references list the number at little more than 17,000 coins. Whatever the case, the majority of survivors are heavily worn and abraded, as most early Carson City coinage went straight into circulation at the time of issue. NGC has certified a meager six examples in Mint State condition, with none so-graded at PCGS (4/14). This piece displays complete detail, with pale bronze-gold color over both sides. NGC notes cleaning, though faint hints of luster are still seen on the reverse when turned in-hand. Light, scattered abrasions are present, but none are individually detracting. A still-pleasing, unworn example of this sought-after Carson City issue.
