1871-CC Double Eagle, XF40
The 'Other' Carson City Key

1871-CC $20 XF40 PCGS. Variety 1-A. After the highly heralded 1870-CC, the 1871-CC is the rarest double eagle from the famous Carson City Mint, and is the only other true "stopper" in the Carson City short set. Moreover, the certified population reports are skewed by resubmissions, particularly in the upper AU grades. The typically seen example of this date grades VF or XF at best, and it is a scarce occurrence when an About Uncirculated piece is offered; even the coin in the Smithsonian Institution grades just XF45, per Garrett and Guth. Mint State examples are prohibitively rare, numbering at just eight coins on the certified population reports, including resubmissions. The sole finest is a single MS64 NGC coin -- the finest by three grade points -- which we auctioned in our April 2008 Central States Signature sale for a record-setting $414,000.

The present XF coin displays deep orange-gold patina with hints of semiprooflike mirroring evident in the protected peripheral recesses. Minor wear is present, although the motifs are unusually bold for this grade level. An old mark on Liberty's chin is the only abrasion of note, and the overall eye appeal is beyond what is expected for an XF40 Carson City coin. Population: 20 in 40, 75 finer (5/15).
