Description

1871-S Double Eagle, MS62
Scarce Type Two Issue

1871-S $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. The 1871-S Type Two double eagle is usually found well-circulated, usually Very Fine to Extremely Fine. A Mint State example such as the present specimen in MS62 is quite an unusual find. Garrett and Guth write that "examples in MS-60 and MS-61 are usually the best available." This reddish-orange example exhibits a sharp strike over richly lustrous surfaces. A few stray marks are in keeping with the grade, but there are no singular abrasions and the eye appeal is excellent. As an S-mint Type Two double eagle in MS62, this piece should see a lot of collector interest. PCGS has certified 18 pieces at this level, with two finer (8/10). But how many different coins are actually available?(Registry values: N4719)
