Popular 1872-CC Double Eagle, AU55

1872-CC $20 AU55 NGC. Rusty Goe, in his The Mint on Carson Street, notes that while coinage at the Carson City Mint increased between 1871 and 1872, the rate of increase in coinage lagged the growth in gold deposits, so that "in 1872, miners requested just 16% of their deposits to be paid in gold coins, with the balance being returned as gold bars or certificates drawn on San Francisco banks." A continuation of this trend would set the stage for the Nevada facility's increasing irrelevance in its later years.
Though the Carson City Mint did not endure, the coins it produced did, and it can be argued that double eagles such as this 1872-CC coin have never been more relevant to collectors. The present example is barely worn and well struck with rich yellow-gold luster. A measure of alloy is noted to the left of the portrait, and below it is a diagonal line of reed marks. The surfaces are lightly abraded elsewhere.(Registry values: N2998)
