Condition Rarity in Higher Grades

1872-S $20 MS61 NGC. The 1872-S double eagle is a well known condition rarity, readily available in circulated grades, but scarce in Mint State, and very rare above MS61. The present coin features rich, orange-gold surfaces, with strong mint luster and the usual number of minor abrasions for the grade. The strike is a little soft on Liberty's hair, but other devices are sharply detailed. Census: 65 in 61, 9 finer (7/10).(Registry values: N2998)
