Description

1873-CC Double Eagle, AU55
Better Type Two Issue

1873-CC $20 AU55 NGC. Variety 1-A, the only known dies for the date. The 1873-CC double eagle enjoyed a mintage of just 22,410 pieces, fairly small for an early Carson City twenty. Doug Winter estimates a total of 400-500 examples may survive today, with 135-150 specimens in AU grades. A few small hoards surfaced in the 1990s to augment the thin supply of high grade examples.
The present coin is an attractive, well-detailed specimen, with yellow-gold surfaces accented by hints of orange. The central curls show some weakness, as often seen on this issue, but the stars are sharp, and the reverse retains fine detail throughout. A few scattered handling marks are entirely consistent with the grade.
