Description

1873-CC Double Eagle
Lustrous, Near-Mint Example

1873-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1-A. This 1873-CC double eagle was minted as the United States slipped into a prolonged period of economic crisis. The Coinage Act of 1873 (labeled "The Crime of '73" by Western mining interests) depressed silver prices, which had a ripple effect throughout the economy. Silver was demonetized and gold became, in effect, the sole metallic standard in the United States.

Unlike subsequent years when double eagles would be used primarily for foreign trade, most 1873-CC twenties circulated domestically in the West. This AU58 example saw brief circulation, although the luster and sharp devices show little evidence of wear. As expected, numerous abrasions dot the lustrous, yellow-gold surfaces. The coin is a viable, near-Mint candidate for collectors who are either unable to find an Uncirculated example, or want to avoid the large price tag for a Mint State piece.
