Description

1873-CC Double Eagle, AU58
High-End for the Grade, CAC Approval
Lustrous and Strongly Defined

1873-CC $20 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1-A. Ex: Nevada-Rian's Bequest. The fourth issue in the Carson City double eagle series enjoys a low mintage of 22,410 coins and a survival rate between 0.75% and 2.25%. That translates to about 375 to 500 coins, the vast majority of which are in XF to mid-AU condition. This marvelous CAC-endorsed representative (among the finest with a green sticker) is on the cusp of joining the 15 to 20 examples that exist in Mint State.

Although PCGS must have seen a trace of wear when they examined this coin, we have a hard time identifying what prevented the service from awarding an even higher grade. Radiant mint frost shines around the devices. Strike detail is strong for the issue, and rich orange-gold surfaces display relatively minor marks. PCGS reports 19 finer submissions. CAC: 14 in 58, 0 finer (11/21).
