1873-CC Double Eagle, Lustrous MS61
Exceptionally Rare This Fine

1873-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Winter 2-A, Misplaced Digit in Dentils. Struck during the historic year when the Coinage Act of 1873 took effect, the 1873-CC completes the challenging first four dates in the CC double eagle series. In general, the four early twenties are a rugged bunch, often lacking strong eye appeal since the eye appeal is compromised by frequent bagmarks and abrasions. Each of the four issues is rare in Mint State, with low survival rates and intense competition for the few remaining specimens. The 1873-CC is the most available of the quartet in Uncirculated condition, with most examples congregating at the MS60 and MS61 grades. A single MS63 coin at PCGS tops the certified population. One other piece grades MS62 at PCGS and eight MS61 coins appear on the current PCGS population report (1/25). Of those MS61 examples, this 1873-CC is a revelation. While the 1873-CC issue is generally regarded as the best-produced of the early Carson City twenties and is sometimes considered the top-quality Type Two double eagle in terms of production quality by the Old West mint, this coin lives up to those accolades. The strike is notably sharp on both the obverse and the reverse and distinctly so on the eagle's finer feather details. The all-important Small CC mintmark is widely spaced. On the obverse, remnants of a misplaced digit exist in the dentils between 7 and 3, one of three die varieties that exist this popular date.

As expected for the assigned grade, a handful of marks exist on both sides. A segmented scrape between star 3 and the bridge of Liberty's nose is the most prominent obverse mark. Smaller contacts include a short one on the cheekbone and a cluster of minor marks below the bust tip. Reverse marks are of lesser severity and of minor distraction. Wide expanses of unmarked fields remain throughout this attractive 1873-CC twenty. Vibrant mint luster illuminates attractive reddish-peach accents and canary-yellow highlights throughout the pleasing orange-gold coloration. We are confident few comparable examples exist at this grade level, which tend to be tightly held and seldom offered given the legions of Carson City and branch mint gold enthusiasts. A strong bid is in order. PCGS Population: 8 in 61, 2 finer (1/25).
