Description
1873-S Double Eagle, MS62+
Closed 3, Few Known Finer
1873-S $20 Closed 3 MS62+ PCGS. CAC. Struck prior to receipt
of new Open 3 dies, 1873 Closed 3 double eagles circulated heavily
in the West and few pieces were preserved in collector hands.
Although the Open 3 twenties are rarer, Mint State Closed 3
examples are scarce-to-rare, and seldom exceed the MS62 grade. This
frosted, orange-gold example is Plus-graded with CAC endorsement.
Mint luster glows throughout the sharply struck surfaces, and only
light bagmarks are seen with a loupe. Well under a dozen pieces
exist in finer grades at both services combined. Population: 8 in
62+, 3 finer. CAC: 16 in 62, 0 finer (10/19).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26AK, PCGS# 8969, Greysheet# 9918)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
