Description

1873-S Closed 3 Twenty Dollar, MS63
Lustrous Golden-Orange Surfaces
One Coin Graded Higher

1873-S $20 Closed 3 MS63 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint mainly coined Open 3 doubles eagles in 1873, while the San Francisco Mint produced mostly Closed 3 twenties. Both issues are plentiful, representing the two collectible double eagle issues for the year, but the 1873-S Closed 3 is many times rarer in high grades. Examples are scarcely seen above MS61, and there are probably only five or so examples that meet the requirements for an MS63 assessment.

Highly lustrous golden-orange surfaces display khaki-gold accents throughout this original Select Uncirculated survivor. Detail is good, if incomplete on the obverse, while the eagle's feathers, including those on the neck, are fully defined. There are minor scuffs and abrasions on each side, but the overall appeal of this San Francisco double eagle is excellent. Census: 3 in 63, 1 finer (11/18).(Registry values: N7079)
