Description
1873-S Double Eagle, MS63+
Closed 3, Conditionally Rare
1873-S $20 Closed 3 MS63+ NGC. Small S. The logotype of the
3 was changed at Philadelphia on several denominations early in
1873, so that it less resembled an 8 at arm's length. The new dies
made at Philadelphia took considerable time to reach distant San
Francisco. As a result, the 1873-S Closed 3 is more available than
its Open 3 successor. Both are rare in Select Mint State, as usual
for the Type Two design. This lustrous honey-gold representative is
nicely struck and without any individually mentionable marks.
Census: 3 in 63 (1 in 63+), 1 finer (9/19).(Registry values: N7079)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26AK, PCGS# 8969, Greysheet# 9918)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
