1873-S Closed 3 Twenty, MS63
A Condition Rarity
None Certified Finer at PCGS

1873-S $20 Closed 3 MS63 PCGS. Ex: The Fairmont Collection. Chief Coiner Archibald Louden Snowden modified the 3 punch in the date partway through the 1873 coinage year, deciding the old Closed 3 numeral looked too much like an 8. New dies were made in Philadelphia and shipped to San Francisco featuring the Open 3 digit. In the meantime, a substantial mintage of Closed 3 double eagles were struck and today the Closed 3 is more prevalent than the Open 3. Both varieties circulated widely throughout the West Coast. While circulated examples are readily available, Mint State pieces quickly become scarce and at the MS63 level any 1873-S double eagle is rare. This is an impressive Closed 3 example with lustrous and natural surfaces. Only a few light marks are seen on either side. Attractive wheat-gold color and a sharp strike provide substantial eye appeal. PCGS Population: 7 in 63, 0 finer (6/25).(Registry values: N7079)
