1873-S $20 Open 3 AU58 NGC. Although the Open 3 Philadelphia issue is common, dies with the new date logotype had to travel cross-country to San Francisco. By that time, most of the million-plus mintage for the year had already been struck with Closed 3 dies, which made its Open 3 counterpart significantly scarcer. This lemon-gold example has a light pinscratch on the cheekbone and a faint grease streak beneath the hair bun.(Registry values: N991)
