Elusive Mint State 1873-S Open 3 Twenty
Only Four Finer at PCGS

1873-S $20 Open 3 MS61 PCGS. CAC. The largish mintage of 1.04 million double eagles made of the 1873-S includes both the Closed 3 (or Close 3, more properly) and Open 3 coins, but the Open 3 is considerably more elusive, particularly in Mint State where it is a notable rarity. Given the certified populations, it appears that a 70:30 split is a good bet, with the Open 3 accounting for the 30%. This piece is well struck overall, although it displays some softness on the highest points of Liberty's hair. The light orange-gold surfaces emanate bright luster. A scratch on Liberty's throat and some minor handling marks in the fields are grade-consistent, but this piece is nonetheless difficult to improve upon, either numerically or aesthetically. Population: 25 in 61, 4 finer (6/10).(Registry values: N4719)
