Description

Shining MS62 1873-S Open 3 Twenty

1873-S $20 Open 3 MS62 PCGS. The later and significantly more elusive of two varieties for the year, the Open 3 1873-S double eagle does not command a significant premium over its Closed 3 counterpart until the AU level. At that grade and above, however, specialists have recognized the variety's rarity, and prices have risen along with that recognition. This MS62 example is tied for finest certified by either NGC or PCGS (8/09), and it is one of just four graded by the latter service. Both sides of this well struck piece have strong yellow-gold luster with occasional hints of sun-gold color. Modestly abraded for a coin not granted the Select designation.(Registry values: N4719)
