Description
Well Struck 1874 Double Eagle, MS62
Conditionally Elusive Type Two Issue
1874 $20 MS62 PCGS. The mintage of the 1874 double eagle was
just about a third of a million pieces, and this Type Two issue is
scarce in Mint State and seldom seen above MS61. The present MS62
example is one of 22 so certified at PCGS, with six finer (8/10).
Although this piece shows a few moderate abrasions that define the
grade, the only ones that require singular mention are a scrape
through Liberty's hair and forehead and a semicircular abrasion on
the upper shield lines. The khaki-gold surfaces nonetheless offer a
good strike--notice how all of the star centrils are fully
defined--and lots of eye appeal.(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26AN, PCGS# 8970, Greysheet# 9812)
