Description
1874 Double Eagle, Frosty MS62
Rarely Seen This Fine
1874 $20 MS62 PCGS. In Mint State, the 1874 double eagle is
seldom available, and most such coins are heavily abraded, grading
no finer than MS61; finer pieces are rare and anything better than
MS62 is exceedingly so. The coin in the Smithsonian Institution
grades just AU55, per Garrett and Guth. The present piece is
attractively frosty with original yellow-gold luster and
well-defined motifs. Grade-limiting abrasions are primarily
restricted to the obverse, the most noticeable being a vertical cut
on Liberty's throat. The rarity of finer examples makes this piece
an ideal acquisition for the quality-seeker. Population: 33 in 62,
7 finer (5/15).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26AN, PCGS# 8970, Greysheet# 9812)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
