Description

1874 Double Eagle, MS62
Frosty Type Two Condition Rarity

1874 $20 MS62 PCGS. The three operational U.S. mints struck more double eagles in 1874 than all other denominations combined. Treasury reserves were low, barely more than $115 million, perhaps explaining the large output of twenty dollar gold coins. The vast majority came from San Francisco, where they were required for commercial purposes. The East Coast economy was still reeling from the Panic of 1873, and Philadelphia production amounted to a relatively small number of 366,780 coins. The 1874 is among the more collectible Type Two twenties. Examples are usually found in VF to AU and are somewhat available through MS61. However, the issue becomes conditionally rare in MS62, where PCGS has seen only 33 submissions and seven examples finer (9/15).

Vibrant frost rolls over the light rose-gold surfaces of this Uncirculated double eagle. The strike is nearly full, save for the high points of Liberty's curls. Small bagmarks are scattered over each side, but the only singular impairment is a tick on the upper cheek. Otherwise, this attractive MS62 coin is seemingly clean for the grade, especially on the reverse.(Registry values: N4719)
